ART APPRAISAL
Many South African artists were trained and educated in European Movements and Schools. Understanding this line of art development as well as the timeline, one needs to study art trends and development on the different continents to place South African art in global and historical context. Artist can be trained or have the artistic gift to express themselves spontaneously in aesthetic enlightenment. The appraiser identifies the true aesthetic value by observing, analysing and researching; and thereby placing the art in context.
ART VALUATION
Valuation of art has two aspects: One concerning historical/aesthetic value and the other concerning monetary investment. Aesthetic value is determined as stated in “art appraisal”. Monetary estimate valuations are conducted to establish approximate values for the purpose of investment, insurance, legal actions and/or collecting. Monetary value is determined by comparing historical art sales, current auction house sales records, pricing in art galleries and data graphics of art sale trends.
ART CONSERVATION
Art objects are sensitive compositions of slowly deteriorating materials. Environmental circumstances play an important role in the maintenance of art. Conservation and Restoration as well as in-house maintenance of the collection is of crucial importance to secure its sustainability. Documentation and record keeping of an artwork's condition is important in the buying or selling of art.
